Final Communiqué: The International Conference on the Role of Media in Combating Terrorism  Applauds at the conclusion of its works today the efforts of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Confronting   Extremism  and Terrorism

The International Conference on" the Role of Media in Combating Terrorism " has applauded the sincere and rapid efforts made by Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under the leadership of Custodian of Two Holy Massjids  King Salman Ibn Abdul Aziz , for confronting the forces of   extremism  and terrorism with a view to protecting the integrity of the Arab and Muslim Ummah.

The  said three-day Conference, organized at Asyut University , Arab Republic of Egypt, has concluded its works today, under the chairmanship of H. E. Dr. Abdullah Ibn Abdulmohsin Alturki , Secretary General of the Muslim World League and President of the League of Islamic University and  recommended the development of an Islamic media strategy for the combat of terrorism , in addition to  providing  technical  sources and required manpower in a manner that secures an effective presence  in combating  a danger, threatening all mankind  and working under the mask of Islamic slogans, which has nothing at all to do with Islam.

The Conference has called upon the Muslim World League to the necessity of conducting a Symposium which should be attended by journalists , media personnel, modern technology experts so as to find out the means  required to follow up terrorists  via internet and digital media. The Conference urged media institutions to promote the noble educational values derived from the true religion as the first step in building the Muslim individual who is capable of confronting terrorism and extremism via the  enhancement of  media educational programs in the Arab and Muslim countries.

The Conference's recommendations have emphasized the necessity of supporting and maintaining freedom of expression and opinion, provided that it should be responsible and guided by Islamic principles and norms ; and it should seek to encourage building and discourage destruction. The Conference reiterated the significance of  implementing media charters of honor which stipulate that ethical and professional criteria must be taken into account when publishing whatever pertains to terrorist operations; and that violations  committed by certain mass media and which contribute to  the promulgation of phenomena of terrorism , extremism , excessiveness and exclusion , must be limited as far as possible .

The Conference  demanded the complementation of  the efforts of the various  religious, educational, cultural and media institutions in the Muslim World in developing  a strategy for  fighting terrorism , so that the security solutions – despite their significance – won't be the only  effort that spearheads the scene in the confrontation process. The Conference urged mass media to the necessity of enlightening public opinion on this matter and the family to the necessity of playing its anticipated role in protecting the younger generation from being dragged   into the  claws of extremism , violence and  of terrorism.

The Conference has drawn the attention of people to the fact that it is essential for mass media to arrange for experts to discuss, wisely, judiciously and minutely  the concepts of terrorist groups, expose their danger, refute their arguments via employment of  traditional and new  media matrixes. The media is also urged to concentrate  on media messages directed to the west regarding the distinction between creativity and freedom of expression that must be respected  as well as defended and the responsibility of the western journalist for the necessity of  venerating religions and creeds of others. The media is requested not to unjustly link Islam to terrorism, together with  confirming that terrorism has no religion ; and implement the recommendations adopted by international conferences on media  tacking of religious symbols.

The Conference's recommendations underlined the significance of non-giving opportunities at mass media forums to non- specialists in media and Islamic knowledge claimers , who distort the beautiful and genuine image of Islam, create sedition (Fitnah) , fanaticism and hatred. The Conference requested that the role of mass media in Muslim countries made be activated in the efforts made for the support of  Muslim communities outside the Muslim world so that they discharge their function  in elucidating  the realities of Islam , defending it and in introducing its principles.

The Conference appealed to those concerned to qualify and train media personnel who are capable of competition at media departments and colleges at the Islamic universities; and provide them with the media ethics method,  ethics of dialogue with other in the light of the principles of Islam. It also highlighted the necessity of cooperation  among  the different institutions in the Muslim world  to adopt  procedures that limit the phenomenon of electronic terrorism, which is considered one of the most significant tools employed by terrorist group in the dissemination of their thoughts.

At the last portion of the recommendation, the Conferences applauds the efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in fighting terrorism via holding  various conferences , conducting academic research papers and preparing useful programs in the different parts of the world.

H. E. Dr. Abdullah Ibn Abdulmohsin  Alturki , Secretary General of the Muslim World League expressed in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency his hope the Muslim Ummah will unite  and agree so as to reject all sorts of excessiveness, extremism and militancy in religion and which lead to the spread of violence and terrorism. HIS Excellency also demanded mass media in the Muslim countries  to adopt  genuine professional criteria to project the tolerance  of the Islamic religion and call for peace and cooperation in order to inhabit the earth , away from all features of violence, killing and exclusion.
