14th Makkah Al-Mukarramah Conference

Human Rights between Islamic Shari’a and International Conventions

Organized by the Muslim World League

Secretariat General

Um al-Jood – Makkah Al-Mukarramah

5 - 7/12/1434 H --- 10 - 12/10/2013

The massive changes and new developments sweeping some countries of the Muslim world, in addition to the impetus behind these changes have highlighted people’s aspiration to return to the pure teachings of Islam after many years of exclusion. Such exclusion was the cause of bitter poverty, underdevelopment and downfall in term of growth and prosperity.

Today, more than ever before, the Muslims are requested to show the true guidance of Islam in relation to rights and overall freedoms. They should highlight the Sharia’s rules and regulations in safeguarding and protecting these rights and freedoms from abuse and violation.

They should enlighten Muslims about the facts of their religion and its role in upholding  these rights and freedoms. Muslims should feel added confidence that this divine Shari’a is an effective cure to all man’s problems and a balsam to conflicts plaguing humanity.

We Muslims owe it to humanity to inform them about Islam. People are in great need of it in light of the decline of religious values and the dominance of material life.

In its desire to contribute to the efforts of introducing the principles of Islam regarding human rights; and complementing  the good efforts made in this field, the Muslim World League is organizing its 14th yearly conference titled {Human Rights Between Islamic Shari’a and International Conventions}. A constellation of Scholars and experts will participate in this meeting to discuss different topics.

The participants in the conference will clarify -in a subjective manner- the concept of rights and freedoms in Islam. They will also discuss human rights in international conventions between practice and theory.

Goals of the conference:

  1. Highlight the eminence of Islamic Shari’a, its effort to ensure man’s dignity, to preserve his freedom and to show its precedence over international conventions in this matter.
  2. The promotion of positive aspects of international human law.
  3. To demonstrate human rights principles in Islamic Shari’a in comparison to intellectual ideas in international conventions.
  4. To propagate the culture of human rights, support its activities and enlighten people about issues and problems.
  5. To show the Islamic Sharia’s position vis-à-vis the international human rights conventions’ texts.
  6. Complementarities of visions and efforts aimed at protecting man and ensuring his rights.
  7. Evaluating human rights applications in modern world, and correcting violations and wrong practices.

The Muslim World League extends its thanks and appreciation to the participants of this conference. It also express its thanks and appreciation to the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz for his patronage of this meeting and his support to the Rabita. Thanks are due to their Royal Highnesses Deputy Premier Prince Salam Bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud and Second Deputy Premier Prince Miqrin Bin Abdul-Aziz for their efforts in serving Islam and Muslims.

The MWL thanks His Eminence Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Bin Abdullah Al-Sheikh the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia and the President of its Supreme Council. Thanks are extended to participating researchers and media personnel for their cooperation in this event.
